Music Review: Rosé released her new album "rosie" and it's a mix of emotions
Get ready because Rosé's new album "Rosie" was released on Friday. This album and debut marks Rosé's departure from Blackpink's regular style featuring high-intensity electronic music. Her new album features piano and guitar ballads, and an overall softer tone. The album has a heavy mixture of emotions explored throughout, so let's explore that!
Despite many soft songs, the album also contains some faster and more intense songs with "toxic till the end", "APT" and "drinks or coffee". This mixture of tempo and style shows Rosé's ability to thrive in numerous styles. Especially when compared to the songs from Blackpink, this album shows a new side of her ability outside of KPOP alone.
After some listening, a lot of songs are about heartbreak; however, many other messages are expressed in other songs. First off, "number one girl" is not truly about heartbreak in the typical sense. The song represents the singer's struggle with the public's perception of her. Second off, "3am" seems to represent a complicated relationship, where she's aware the relationship isn't good for her, but she needs the person's love and wants to hold on as much as she can. Lastly "drinks or coffee", tells the story of the singer falling in love with someone that they saw at a party, and wanting to ask them out. As I listened to the song and the references of the singer feeling great at the party because of the subject, I felt feelings of "love at first sight" rather than the overall theme of heartbreak I'd heard in some of the other songs.
Another interesting mention is "toxic till the end", which gives you Taylor Swift vibes. Also worth mentioning is the song's incredible wordplay, "His favorite game is chess, who would ever guess? Playing with the pieces in my chest", I mean who doesn't think that's impressive? As you move through the album, "APT" needs no introduction, it's a fun and silly song based on a fun Korean drinking game featuring drums and Bruno Mars.
As the album closed off with "dance all night" I felt a sense of closure from the heartbreaks shown throughout the album. It felt kind of like she sang her heart out about all the experiences with love and now she wants to dance those troubles away. Rosé shows her incredible adaptability while delivering many strong messages of love, heartbreak, and struggles. An impressive start leaving me excited for more!
